The first aspect of the door that most people think of is door handles. This notoriously round, brass piece has certainly come a long way over the years and is available in a ton of decorative styles, colors, and patterns. Adding lever door handles is a way to add a new, interesting element to a door without sacrificing function. When considering new door hardware, remember that there are no rules that go along with choosing new pieces. Doors are home accents, so treat them as you would treat an end table or a coffee table. Think of the decorative hardware as a pretty lamp on the end table, or a floral centerpiece in the middle of the coffee table. They add an interesting element to an otherwise standard piece in the home. Just like adding knickknacks to a bookshelf, youre adding visually pleasing design to your entryways. By replacing your current standard door hardware with decorative hardware, youll be giving your space an instant home makeover without the hassle or cost of a home remodeling project. The installation of the new decorative hardware is a great do it yourself project, and can be accomplished in one day with minimal set up and clean up.
Barn door hardware is essentially large sliding barn doors that are slightly expensive but elegant looking. The hardware comprises of metal tracks and wheels and bolts required for it to be wall-mounted. An ordinary sliding track can be extremely costly - almost $800 for high-end quality. The doors are not included in this costing and must be purchased locally and later customized to fit your preferences. Some are fitted with sliding mirrors which can be used in bathrooms for extra privacy. The greatest advantage, of course, is that with it, you need not reserve extra space that you would normally have to keep for an ordinary door to be opened. These doors do not slide into walls; rather these add to the overall decor of any room.
These sliding hardware systems are available in a variety of finishes from Flat Black to Weathered Rust. A flat black finish is ideal for any setting, particularly in home offices, business offices, or anywhere else a contemporary style is desired. Also, a flat black finish is perfect for glass doors. Another finish that is popular is the Acrylic Clear Coat finish. The entire system, including the track and hangers, is coated in an acrylic clear coat that seals and protects the steel, while at the same time preserving the rustic nature of a raw mill steel look. This finish is just right for any door that has a slightly aged look to it. Dining rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens are popular destinations for hardware with this finish.
The foregoing are the main types of door hardware. These are all a door needs to function in a basic sense. There is, however, the possibility of adding other types of hardware to a door. For instance, one could conceivably add a door sweep at the bottom. This is most often a thin piece of aluminum with either a piece of rubber or a brush like fibers of some natural or synthetic material that prevent drafts from coming in under the door. These are very handy for drafty exterior doors and are often included with screen doors. They are usually screwed to the front of the door or otherwise affixed.
